Love is blind and lust is too...

Detective David Porter had just closed the file on his latest serial killer case when horrific murders with the same MO start happening in and around Houston. A 15-year veteran of the Houston Police Department, Porter was one of the best serial killer detectives in the country, his talents known worldwide. The recently promoted officer couldn't ask for much more. He was husband to one of the hottest women on the planet, former-model-turned-news-anchor Miranda Porter. He also had two beautiful daughters. Yes, life was good... or so it seemed.

A cunning serial killer was on the prowl, brutally killing every child he could get his hands on. Porter was hot on his trail, but the killer was an expert - no mistakes. A late night of work, a storm and a car accident would lead David head first into another case - a kidnapping - and this time it was personal. Could there be a connection between the two? David was staring face-first down the barrel of both cases and time was running out.

Does Detective Porter have what it takes to bring these criminals to justice? Will the good life he once enjoyed elude him forever? Only time will tell.

Chained Guilt (Audible Audio Edition) Jeffrey Kafer Terry Keys Books

No interest in a book that does not bring a key story line to a conclusion. I will not buy book 2.

Chained Guilt (Audible Audio Edition) Jeffrey Kafer Terry Keys Books Reviews

My review is based on the Audiobook. The story was fast paced and I enjoyed the characters. Overall is was a good read but some things are just too unrealistic. David Porter is hailed as the best detective so it is hard to believe he does not check out a new love interest more thoroughly especially before allowing her to move in and be a part of his daughters lives. He misses some major clues because he is lead by his nether regions and not his brain. My only other issue is that this book contains a major cliffhanger so the story is not complete and you must continue to book 2 (and maybe even 3) to get answers. In my opinion if a cliffhanger like this is involved then it should be mentioned in the blurb. The narrator did a nice job at bringing the story and characters to life.
Let me first admit that I only read the first few pages but that was enough!
This book is the equivalent of a summer block buster action movie - long on things going boom and men (always men) running around doing things, but very, very short on any sort of logic, reason or even sense.

The story starts in a warehouse "in the middle of Russia" surrounded by a "thick Russian forest". No explanation for why a warehouse would be in such a location, but that's okay. But then the protagonist (an American police officer) is ambushed by a dastardly, evil Russian criminal mastermind who asserts "I'm a killer...and a very good one". Yet somehow this killer, and three heavily armed criminal associates, who have lured this foreigner into an ambush of their own choosing, unleashes a hail of bullets that all but one miss. And that one, of course, just causes a flesh wound.

The policeman escapes, leaving a trail of blood and footprints in the snow that, once again, inexplicably are missed by there four trained assassins who are only seconds behind him. He takes cover behind a tree. Despite all the noise, the woods are alive with woods (well, they would be, wouldn't they? Everyone knows there's a wolf every few metres in Russian forests. An unnecessary diversion as the wolf - and the rest of its pack - is dealt with in one paragraph and a single, low-powered shot in the dark.

A couple of paragraphs later and the protagonist comes across "a small, dimly lit log cabin". Seeing as this is "the middle of Russia", I assumed there would be a hook-nosed witch inside, making children-stew. He goes over to this cabin and shouts, "Someone please help me! I'm an American police officer!".
Now, let's remember, this is no more than 100m away from the warehouse from where vast amounts of automatic weapons fire had just been heard. And it's the middle of deepest, darkest Russia in the dead of night and the dead of winter. The inhabitant is a single female (well, technically not alone but her father is sick in bed upstairs making her all the more vulnerable). And what would any sane female do in such a circumstance? Why, open her door and invite the stranger - blood pouring from his shoulder, gun in hand - into her home. And when, seconds later, her fellow countrymen knock on the door, announce themselves as authority figures chasing an armed and desperate convict, what does she do? Lies to them of course, to protect this stranger.
She turns the 'policemen' away, who thank her politely for her time, and as those 'policemen' leave, the American shoots all three of them in the head in front of the woman.

She is obviously shocked but everything is OK because he shows her his US police badge (as if she would recognise one) and says... wait for it... "Relax. I'm a good guy."...

Three dead Russians on her doorstep and 'he's a good guy'. And she believes him. Well, sorry, but I don't. I couldn't believe any of this. So I stopped reading.
I don't normally write reviews, but I need to vent a bit since I finished this book. After all the positive reviews, I had high hopes for the story, but was very disappointed by the quality of writing. It felt like a first draft novel, filled with clichés and amateurish description. While the framework of the plot held some promise, I was disappointed and felt manipulated by the ending. The detective, allegedly brilliant, failed to show me said brilliance, especially in the last chapter when he couldn't seem to get in detective mode as his daughter broke the case. There were too many instances of "if only she'd/he'd said something," a tired plot device. The ending left me frustrated enough that I don't think I'll be reading Book 2, and certainly not waiting for Book 3.
Totally unrealistic. Jumps around from one thing to another and doesn't make sense because the things seem unrelated. Tries to show the police detective as a smart, tough character who loves his wife and kids, but then the next minute it shows him as a wimpy, bumbling idiot. He quickly jumps into bed with another woman a few months after his wife disappears when they are still unsure whether she is alive or dead. He obviously doesn't even like the other woman that much since his kids practically had to beg him to go out with her. What kid, whose mother had just disappeared a few months before with everyone unsure if she was dead or alive, would be urging their father to date another woman, especially when one of the kids is just five years old? Not happening! Not in a million years. After only a few dates, this smart detective believes what this woman says instead of what his daughter says, and won't even listen to the daughter. Then he lets This woman who is almost a stranger manipulate him into letting her move in with him and his family even though his daughter objects and he knows it will cause trouble in his family. He continues to let the psycho woman totally manipulate and control him while he is oblivious to what is going on. All because of sex? He didn't even seem like he was that interested in sex with her and had to be seduced into it. Why on earth would anyone do something that insane? All of this happens while the great detective doesn't recognize that this woman is someone who accused him of rape in college only 10 or 15 years before? Get real! I think that might be someone you would remember even with a different color of hair and eyes. The author even had his daughter's boyfriend recognize the woman living with him now as the same woman in a picture in an old newspaper article about her accusing him of rape, yet the great police detective doesn't recognize her?? Surely the police detective can't be that stupid. He's got to be the absolute worst detective ever, but the author previously tried to say he was the very best detective around. There are just too many discrepancies in this man's character for it too be believable that he is even remotely the same person. Terrible ending to the book, if you can call it an ending. Basically it is a cliff hanger instead of an ending, to try too get you to buy his next book to find out the ending. No thanks! The first one was a waste of my time. He should have given the readers an ending in this book instead of showing a total disregard for the readers who bought this book. Not good!
