This is a great book and the best one I've read so far, including even Caroline Knapp's vaunted "Drinking: A Love Story". If you think you might be a "high bottom drunk", or even just prone to drinking a bit too much or too often now and again, this book is a must-read. I like how she also focused so much on all the positive mental, physical, and emotional results she experienced upon quitting cold turkey. I can say that my experiences were echoed in her own. I also appreciate her nuanced and knowing understanding of the social difficulties associated with being completely alcohol-free. Everybody's experience with alcohol is different, as well as their personal history of dealing with it. So her words may or may not resonate with you, but she writes with great humanity and I think that drinkers and ex-drinkers of all types will find something in this book that is relatable and true to their experience. Very definitely a recommended read for anyone who has considered quitting or cutting back on the sauce.

The narrative lacked depth. As though the author wished to only stay on the surface of her troubled relationship with alcohol. There were engaging passages written with both creativity and humour. For the most part, however, the book was experienced as a surface-deep and abbreviated account of the author's path to self-discovery with her problem-drinking serving as too simple a backdrop.
The entire time i was reading this short book, I felt as if it had been written with me in mind. From the very first page, when she talks about procrastinating on her writing, to turning to meditation in order to better understand herself and what made her drink.
I didn't learn very much I didn't already know about my own relationship with alcohol and why I ultimately have it up, but I did find comfort in knowing there are others on the same journey to self-awareness as I. For those contemplating their relationship with alcohol or drugs, I can't recommend this book enough.
Been sober almost one year! This title and others helped me see the light at the end of my dark journey. It helps to know that I am not alone...that others have been there, done that. I could relate to the words I read. I choose happiness!
I enjoyed Hollenstein's insights and her honest approach to why life without alcohol is so much better than distorting both the good and bad in life with a substance that ultimately sends us on a downward elevator. We can get off on any floor once we decide the time to stop drinking is right now.
This short book is a relateable, honest account from a person finding her way through life after realizing her relationship with alcohol is no longer serving her well. It takes a broad view around the drive to drink and offers the author's path and tools that helped her move through the discomfort that inevitably comes when we put down the 'fix' and bravely look at what feels broken. To stay with ourselves when the urge to 'fix' comes up and eventually passes is a strength that develops through practice. This book gives the reader the tools that served her well on that journey.
Am so glad to have ordered this book. It spoke to me in the first few sentences and I spend a whole evening reading, underlining, going back and reading again. It is well written and communicates well the emotional side of drinking and alcohol abuse so well. I highly recommend this book, it is a great tool and resource to visit and revisit.
This is a very personal and well-written book about problem drinking that takes you from the decision to quit drinking through the aftermath. It stands out from the many memoirs that instead take you through the long downward spiral of severe alcoholism and just up to sobriety. The author shares a lot of wisdom without coming off as preachy. An interesting and worthwhile read.
